If I knew all I needed to do to turn my fledgling business into more of a success was play golf, I’d have taken the sport up years ago! I’m not a good golfer, in fact, I’m close to awful. I haven’t been playing long and spend more time in the rough, dropping balls and taking free hits than actually playing well but…one thing’s for sure, if I had to recommend a great place to network with other likeminded business people, it would be on the golf course.

Why being rubbish at Golf makes Par 5′s one recipe to success.
Where I come from (the North East of England), golf is not a common hobby, not everyone and their dog plays, and not everyone wants to play – but of those that do you, can guarantee one of two things 1) they run their own businesses or 2) they’re retired and know people who run their own businesses.

Why is that worth mentioning? Well as you’ll know one of the major growth factors in any business is partnerships. Working with other people to acheive goals or knowing people who can save you a few quid is essential when you’re on the lookout for the next good deal and, in line with the title of this article, Par 5′s are a cracking place to get business leads.

Like I’ve already said, I spend most of my time in the rough but the good thing about that is that I get to spend a lot of time talking to people as I play. Now I run a few businesses, and I genuinely believe I offer good services in each and every one of them. For example, I have a New Business Start-Up Investment company, an Online Marketing and Promotion company and a Home Recycling company. Each one of these businesses offer a service/product that is very much in the limelight where I live right now and when I get the opportunity to answer that most wonderful of questions I get asked on the golf course, “What does your company do again?”, I answer with my practiced pitch in a way that seems natural, poetically nonplussed and casual even, and before you know it, the next hour or so is spent discussing a few business angles and getting to know the people I’m playing with and all of a sudden, my profile has been lifted with potential clients and if you didn’t know any better, you’d almost think I’d planned it!

Planting the Seed of Brand Recall on the Fairway
Now if you’re into sales and marketing, you’ll know that many of your customers will need to be exposed to your advertising more than once before they commit to a purchase. Likewise with networking and building up contacts. The poeple you’re playing with may not want your services today, or tomorrow, but if you play with them again next week, and the week after, you can be pretty sure that eventually, when they need access to a service that you supply, you’ll be one of the first ports of call.
